Natya Sangeet

Natya Sangeet essentially means Music sung in Dramas.
This is a genre very much famous in Maharasthtra and Goa.

The history behind the genre is as below.

Classical music was very prelevant in the 1800s. But not everyone had the ear for it and thus it ended up more patronised in the royal chambers of Peshwas and Chatrapatis. In such a scenario, to make music much more contemporary, stalwart playwrights and directors like Trilokekar  and  Kirlosker wrote and produced Sangeet Nataks aka Music Dramas. Thus Nal Damayanti by Trilokekar  staged in 1879 and Sangeet Shankuntal by Kirlosker in 1880 became the first of the many Sangeet Nataks to grip the audience.

From then till now we have around 150 sangeet nataks with varied popularity.

A Sangeet Natak typically has a mythological theme/story , the script is interspersed with melodious Natyageets.

Natya geets are based on Raags and follow the rules of the base raaga , though different artistes included variations to improve the melodious qualities. There are Aalaps and Taanas  , though in a lesser intensity than a Bada Khayal.

A Sangeet Natak always begins with a 'Naandi' or invocation. Well known Naandis are 'Naman Natawara' and 'Rund Maal Dhar'

Many stalwart singers graced this genres. Bal Gandarv, Dinanath Mangeshkar, Vasantrao Deshpande,  Annasaheb Kirlosker, Ram Marathe, Jitendra Abhisheki, Kirti Shiledar,Kumar Gandharv,Prabhakar Karekar to name a few.
